begin number five the wrong body sometimes things are inside other things like that tapeworm that lives inside my face pyramids are a bit like a kinder surprise because there are things inside them but whereas the things inside a kinder surprise are often cute little toys the things inside a pyramid are normally dead bodies wrapped in toilet paper i’m not saying you’ll never find a dead body inside a chocolate egg who knows it’s a crazy world but you’re much more likely to find one inside a pyramid but in this first example of an odd thing being found inside a pyramid it wasn’t just a body that was discovered but the wrong body for as long as humans have existed we have ruined things for every great thing we’ve given this world like penicillin there is something awful like no man’s sky thanks to our destructive nature what happened to the rainforest again it should come as no surprise that there’s not much left in this 3 800 year old pyramid in dasher egypt in exploring the rubble in 2017 the researchers identified the pharaoh of the pyramid perfectly normal right most egyptian pyramids have a dead pharaoh in them the name ameni kamau was inscribed on an alabaster block nicely clarifying who the body belonged to nothing creepy here nothing mysterious right wrong this was only the beginning of a fascinating mystery you see archaeologists had already found a mini camau’s pyramid way back in 1957 roughly 2000 feet away from this new site so what was going on here maybe ameni was showboating enough to have two pyramids but having only ruled for a mere two years it made no sense that he would not have one but two giant structures built in his name something was up something strange was afoot there was a creepy mystery to dig up get it dig the archaeologists continued to explore their way through what was left of the ruined pyramid and upon finding the body of the buried pharaoh quickly realized it was not the body of a many kamau so what was happening here had he slapped his name on somebody else’s grave bit weird or had somebody else stuck their body in his even weirder about a month after this discovery was announced archaeologists said they might have a possible reason they found a burial chamber and it didn’t contain the pharaoh instead they found a wooden box with the name hatch upset carved into it and they worked backward from there the boxes were used to hold canopic jars which would in turn hold organs now the theory was that hatch upset not the other more famous hatch-up soot was amini kamau’s daughter and when she died her father essentially took someone else’s pyramid scratched out their name wrote in his and used it to bury his daughter it’s certainly one way to honor your daughter a creepy way but hey at least he investigators found the fragments inside the ruins of oxyrhynchus a sizable ancient town in southern egypt that flourished at a time when the roman empire controlled egypt the town’s arid conditions meant that the papyri used by the residents survived nearly two millennia the papyri include christian gospels and magical spells is there anything more terrifying than long-lost magical incantations tucked away in places once out of human reach discovering a mysterious ancient document full of spells is how a lot of horror movies start today the united kingdom’s egypt exploration society which sponsored the grenfell and hunt expeditions owns many of the papyri keeping them at the university of oxford supposedly so nobody can take advantage of the magic contained within scholars have been analyzing and translating the papyri ever since the fragments were discovered but the sheer number of texts means that many are still unpublished the terrifying thing about these papers is just how much we don’t understand them who’s to know what secrets of the world may be hidden in their pages number three portals to other realms of existence all sorts of bizarre things have been found inside sorts of mini horrors undisturbed for 1 800 years the sealed off passage was found to contain thousands of extraordinary treasures lying exactly where they had first been placed as ritual offerings to the gods items unearthed included greenstone crocodile teeth crystals shaped into eyes and sculptures of jaguars ready to pounce even more remarkable was a miniature mountainous landscape 17 meters underground with tiny pools of liquid mercury representing lakes the walls of the tunnel were found to have been carefully impregnated with powdered pyrite or fool’s gold to give the effect in firelight of standing under a galaxy of stars it’s all creepy enough as it is but it gets all the more terrifying among the many trinkets tucked away in this secret corner of the pyramid were necklaces made of human teeth much of what was found suggests that significant and horrific human sacrifices were a common practice there is no doubt that men were killed in this room the question is at the end of the passage the team uncovered four greenstone statues which are a highlight of the de young show they are wearing garments and beads and their open eyes would have shown with minerals two were still in their original positions leaning back and apparently gazing up at the axis where the three planes of the universe meet these are the founding shamans of the teotihuacan who guided pilgrims to the sacred place they carried bundles of sacred objects used to perform magic including pendants and pyrite mirrors which were seen as portals to another realm why exactly were they trying to connect with another realm what terrifying plans did they have and which of these realms were they trying to reach the inhabitants of the city along with those from similar civilizations believed that the universe had three levels connected by an axis the celestial plane the earthly plane and the underworld which wasn’t the biblical place of fiery punishment but a dark watery realm of creation with lakes and mountains were they trying to reach out to the celestial plane for wholesome reasons or to the underworld for devilish ones were they hoping to go into the underworld themselves or were 4 000 years even after hundreds of years of archaeological and scientific exploration they’re continuing to surprise us a recent project has found striking thermal anomalies on the eastern side of the great pyramid of giza the discovery was part of the operation scan pyramid a recent project that has already used cosmic rays and drones to analyze the pyramids by a group of scientists from egypt france canada and japan under authority from the egyptian antiquities ministry with the ongoing plan to discover new tombs and hidden burial chambers the project used thermal imaging technology on the pyramid which found mysterious heat spots on the monuments at the lower level of the kiops or great pyramid they found an area of neighboring blocks that had a temperature gap far greater than would normally be expected for adjacent stones made with different qualities of limestone since air gaps don’t hold heat as well as rock or sand a difference in temperature could reveal information about the pyramid structure hidden beneath the surface however the teams still aren’t certain what exactly it is it could be a tomb a cavity a passage or even just a crack in the rock what do you think it have a secret bottomless pit were they throwing people into it summoning things from it the space’s dimensions resemble those of the pyramid’s grand gallery the 153 foot long 26 foot tall corridor that leads to the burial chamber of khufu the pharaoh for whom the pyramid was built however it remains unclear what lies within the space what purpose it’s served or if it’s one of multiple spaces the void is the first large inner structure discovered within the 4 500 year old pyramid since the 1800s and here’s the craziest thing the giant hole we only discovered it because of a little intergalactic help yes really experts think that chasm is there because the land had been bombarded with cosmic rays earth is constantly hit with cosmic rays compromising hydrogen nuclei that break up into smaller particles when they slam into the planet’s atmosphere some of these smaller particles created are called muons which zip down to the surface of the planet at near the speed of light they survive for just millions of seconds muons are everywhere all the time but while they don’t do anything they’re extremely tough to observe but if you can observe them you can use them as a proxy for seeing things that are usually hidden you know like secret vast chambers sitting inside of a 4 500 year old 455 foot tall pyramid because rock absorbs muon energy the researchers look for pockets of space where muons are in greater concentration the research team managed to snag a set of muon detectors called nuclear emulsion films from their japanese partners to observe muons bouncing around what they realized was a 100 foot long cavity in the middle of the pyramid this is the first time muon detectors have been used to score an archaeological breakthrough but it’s simply the latest in an
