whether you’re eight or 80 fossils are fun to look at and inspire our curiosity amber is a fossil prize for its use in jewelry but sometimes special pieces contain rare samples we can study to learn more about how the world was long before humans walked it from a bird with exceptional grabbin ability to a dinosaur with surprising covering here are five surprising discoveries found in amber before we begin make sure to hit the like button subscribe to our Channel and click the notification bill for more amazing videos every day with that being said let’s begin number 5 long toad bird fossils it’s a wondrous thing to know that we’re still discovering things about the history of our planet and the life on it even after centuries of documented archaeological history just this past summer scientists published research about something they haven’t seen before encased in only 6 grams of amber was a bird’s foot not shaped like any other they’ve seen this one had an extraordinarily long third toe amber is a unique semi-precious stone most semi-precious stones like turquoise lapis and amethyst come from deep in the earth formed over millions of years by specific mineral conditions amber is ancient and fossilized but it isn’t formed underground amber is fossilized tree resin valued for its beautiful rarity and its deep orange hue other above-ground gems are coral and Pearl’s also formed by living things because insects and animals live and feed on resin producing trees in rare cases amber will contain a preserved specimen of something that got stuck in a sticky substance and stayed there for millennia found in the Horn Valley of Myanmar Li – in a professor with the China University of geosciences in Beijing China claims he obtained it from an amber trader the amount paid for the small stone was not disclosed but Shing did say that the trader thought the fossil was a lizard foot lizards and birds do share many characteristics but lizards have five toes whereas birds have four so Shing could tell immediately it was a bird based on the size of the foot the bird must have been small about the size of a sparrow think of how small they were in comparison to the other deines scientists named the new yet old species electronics Chengguan G meaning Amber bird and grouped it with the category of extinct birds called een entire knife EES this class of bird went extinct during the Cretaceous Paleogene event which we believe was the cataclysmic event that took out all the other more familiar dinosaurs although paleontologists can only theorize what happened maybe it was a meteor based on carbon dating of fossils who discovered the preserved bird foot in Mayan ma now it’s time for the start topic we all love a good story of a mad scientist those crazy Kooks and quacks are always pushing our world forward but in doing so occasionally discovers strange and sometimes disturbing things take a look at this photo for example a scientist found this solid slab of amber and was baffled to see inside a small creature unlike any creature he’d ever seen many people have pointed out it even looks a little bit like a dinosaur several experts have stuck their noses in to try and determine what this thing may be but nobody can quite crack it what do you think is it actually a small dinosaur or are they all missing something obvious remember to comment down below with the hashtag hashtag star topic and we might pin the comment that best explains what’s being shown on this image with that said let’s keep things moving number 4 we all grew up seeing drawings of dinosaurs covered in green or gray skin that looks like it has the texture of elephant skin or sometimes scales but now it’s irrefutable that some dinosaurs had feathers dr. mikela could tell from the well preserved coloring that the underside of the tail had white feathers and the rest of the body was brown he could tell a lot about this creature just from the shape of the preserved feathers he believes these creatures didn’t fly very much if at all but had feathers for warmth like the goose down in a comforter this piece of amber clearly shows long plumes radiating off the tail bone structures the skin didn’t survive the long journey from past to present but it’s clear that the covering is feathers how do we know that this is a dinosaur and not a prehistoric bird the vertebrae in the tail bone are that of a dinosaur not fused together like a what does this mean for the future of paleontology scientists have a renewed interest in checking amber and other fossils for new discoveries it also has implications for our understanding of the world these feathered quasi lizards make a strong argument for evolution a theory that some very religious people still protest this creature was classified in a group Cola is Oriya a category that includes a variety of creatures from the mighty t-rex to birds living today number three a cephalopod out-of-place the amber in burma known today as mayan ma is the richest on the globe the government of myanmar has taken over control of fossils found thee authorities are trying to prevent the disastrous after-effects from illegal amber mining that is wreaking havoc to the environment in the ukraine this unlawful practice leaves the land pockmarked with dig holes and puts dangerous polluted water runoff into the local watershed another problem plague in the areas around mining sites is the violence that erupts when outlaw miners compete for amber rich dig sites profit ears are getting into armed scuffles at digging sites and staging targeted attacks on rivals in populated areas sellin a pilfered stones has created a whole new black market when this piece was unearthed the nautilus shell was clear to see examiner’s originally wrote it off as a fossilized snail all instances of creatures trapped in amber are significant but snails al and roaming creatures likely to get caught in a sticky pile of tree resin this on further examination turned out to be a type of predatory mollusk called an ammonite these extinct creatures like the mollusk and other creatures that have descended from them were water dwellers there are abundant samples of ammonites preserved in regular rock fossils so scientists have had access to many well preserved samples their descendants creatures like squid cuttlefish and octopi either have an internal shell or no shell at all analyzed bodies make beautiful spiral shells their bodies only occupy the outermost segment and the other sections are filled with air which help to keep these creatures buoyant how this one got stuck in resin is something scientists can only speculate about think about how much resin would have to drop from a tree to create a sticky underwater trap the fact that all of these different factors aligned and that miners were lucky enough to discover it is an incredibly rare event we’re lucky that this next discovery made its way into the hands of scientists and not stolen away into the underworld by a private collector denying the world a chance to marvel at this rare find number two dinosaur parasites this next item is another prehistoric find which is only natural because the journey from resin to fossil the process known as amber ization takes between two million and ten million years this find is less glamorous than a feathery tail but it could offer scientists a lot to think about ticks have been discovered in pieces of amber the same parasites the Plagueis when we’re camping and walking our dogs also bothered the giant prehistoric dinosaurs one specimen shows the little buggers which video surprised you the most and have you ever caught anything unexpected on camera make sure to let us know in the comment
