welcome to wise aging today I’m going to share something truly transformative it’s a simple yet powerful tip that has the potential to change not just your relationships but your overall approach to life imagine being able to communicate your desires clearly confidently and respectfully imagine how that could improve your interactions with others and most importantly how it could change the way you see yourself this is what we’re going to talk about today so if you’re ready to take control of your relationships and your life sit back grab a cup of tea or coffee and let’s dive into a topic that took me years to fully understand and I’m excited to share it with you because I believe that if you Embrace this tip it will have a lasting impact on your life just like it did on mine let’s start with something many of us can relate to growing up I received a lot of advice from well-meaning people family friends teachers about how to behave in relationships and how to interact with others I was told things like be polite don’t be too forward don’t ask for too much and always put others first at the time I thought this was good advice I believed that in order to get along with others especially in romantic relationships I needed to be agreeable accommodating and never push too hard and for a long time that’s exactly what I did I was polite I didn’t ask for too much I went with the flow and tried to avoid conflict at all costs I thought that by being passive I was being respectful and likable but here’s what I didn’t realize by always putting others first and never expressing what I truly wanted I was neglecting myself I was suppressing my own desires and over time that led to frustration dissatisfaction and even resentment does this sound familiar have you ever felt like you were just going along with whatever everyone else wanted without ever stopping to ask yourself what do I want have you ever found yourself saying yes to things you didn’t really want to do just to avoid Making Waves if so you’re not alone many of us have been conditioned to believe that being passive is the key to keeping the peace but the truth is when you constantly suppress your own desires you’re not living an authentic life you’re not being true to yourself and that can take a toll on your relationships your self-esteem and your overall happiness now let me tell you about a turning point in my life a moment when everything changed for me as I got older I started to notice something the people who seemed the happiest the most fulfilled weren’t the ones who were always agreeable or passive they were the ones who knew what they wanted and weren’t afraid to ask for it they communicated their desires clearly and confidently and because of that they built stronger healthier and more authentic relationships these people weren’t pushy or aggressive they were simply self- assured they knew their worth and they weren’t afraid to express their needs that’s when I realized knowing what you want and being able to clearly Express it is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself it’s a game changer it’s not about being selfish or demanding it’s about having the confidence and Clarity to say this is what I want and feeling comfortable enough to follow through with that and when you can do that that something incredible happens you begin to attract people and opportunities that align with your true desires you start living a life that feels authentic and that’s when real happiness and fulfillment come into play so let’s talk about this in more detail when you say I want something you’re not just stating a preference you’re making a powerful statement about who you are you’re showing the world that you you have confidence Clarity and direction in your life and those are incredibly attractive qualities whether it’s in a romantic relationship a friendship or even a professional setting people are drawn to someone who knows what they want and isn’t afraid to express it but and this is important there’s a difference between being assertive and being aggressive assertiveness is about expressing your desires in a way that is respectful to both both yourself and others aggressiveness on the other hand is about forcing your desires on others without considering their needs or feelings what I’m talking about here is cultivating the kind of assertiveness that shows your confident self-respecting and considerate of others perspectives why is this so important well think about it when you’re clear about what you want you’re not only showing respect for yourself you’re also making it easier for others to understand and respect you communication is at the heart of every relationship and when you communicate clearly you create an environment of openness and Trust when you say I want something you’re not just making a request you’re opening the door for honest meaningful communication and that’s where real connection happens now let’s get practical how do you go from being passive or or unsure of yourself to being clear and confident in what you want it’s not something that happens overnight but it’s definitely something you can work on and I’m going to share an exercise with you that can help it’s called the I want exercise and it’s something that I’ve used in my own life with great success here’s how it works for the next week I want you to practice using the phrase I want at least five times a day you can use it conversations with anyone your friends your family your co-workers even the person at the grocery store the goal is to get comfortable expressing your desires in everyday situations no matter how small they may seem for example instead of passively accepting whatever coffee the Barista makes say something like I want my coffee a little stronger please or when making plans with friends don’t just go along with whatever is suggested say I want to go to that new restaurant or I want to see that new movie the point of this exercise isn’t just to get what you want in these small interactions it’s about building your confidence in expressing your desires overall at first this might feel a little uncomfortable you might worry that others will see you as too assertive or that you’ll come across as selfish but let me reassure you confidence is attractive and people respect Clarity when you’re clear about what you want you’re not only showing self-respect but you’re also making it easier for others to respect and appreciate you over time you’ll start to notice a shift not just in how people respond to you but in how you feel about yourself and this shift is incredibly powerful when it comes to relationships think about how many times you’ve been in a situation where you weren’t sure if someone was interested in you or where you were hesitant to express your own interest maybe you’ve said things like oh we could hang out sometime if you want or maybe we should do something together sometime that kind of vague language leaves too much room for uncertainty now imagine if instead you said I want to take you out to dinner on Friday that’s clear direct and confident it shows that you’re not just interested you’re serious and that kind of clarity is incredible attractive here’s the thing people are drawn to someone who knows what they want and isn’t afraid to express it when you can confidently express your desires you project a kind of self- assuredness that people naturally gravitate toward this doesn’t mean being overbearing or controlling it means being a leader in your own life it means showing that you’re capable of making decisions and taking action and that’s something that that others will admire and respect but and this is crucial being firm in what you want doesn’t mean disregarding the desires of others relationships are a two-way street and mutual respect is the key to building strong lasting connections when you’re clear about your own desires you’re also creating space for the other person to be clear about theirs this is how real communication happens when both people feel heard and respected it’s not about one person always getting their way it’s about creating a space where both of you can express your wants and needs openly and honestly now I know that for some of you this might feel like a big leap you might be thinking but what if I come across as too assertive what if I get rejected let me tell you something important vulnerability is where true strength Lies when you express what you want you’re showing the world and yourself that you believe in your own worth yes there’s always the risk of rejection but that’s part of life the more comfortable you get with expressing your desires the more you’ll realize that rejection isn’t the end of the world in fact it’s often just a stepping stone to finding the right connections so here’s my challenge for you this week start practicing the I want exercise pay attention to how it changes your interactions with others and how it makes you feel you might be surprised at how much easier it becomes to express your desires and how people start responding to you in a more positive respectful way this is just the beginning of a journey toward becoming more confident more authentic and More in tune with what you really want if you found
